Key Pulsations is an experiment in collaborative music making. A music seed idea in the form of SuperCollider code will be presented. The SuperCollider community is invited to take part in its transformation into a full scale piece (or pieces, if desired).

a while ago i started porting the java/processing library TRAER.PHYSICS 3.0 by Jeffrey Traer Bernstein to supercollider. it’s a simple and elegant particle system and a physics engine all in one. there are already ports to actionscript3, javascript and c++ (cinder), but i haven’t seen anyone working with it in sc yet. so i had a go – both to learn more and to have an alternative to my own physics library quark redUniverse.

it is now finished and released as a quark. this is the initial version and there might still be bugs. i _did see sc crash once in a strange way after spawning lots of particles, so watch out for memory leaks.
to install it run the following code and recompile sc…

Sometimes, on the 12th of the month I go to church. It is a small hermitage on a mountain who dances with the wind howling at sunset and dance with birdsong at dawn. It was built 800 years ago the men to meet his God, to speak and listen, for hope …

I’ve tried, I’ve searched, far as I can, the corners of my psyche. I did it with reason and unreason; I’ve asked myself and I asked the world, trees, people …

But I can not be like them.

I envy them, they still have a loving father even after his death.

I can not be like them and, despite everything, I’ve seen …

It is a mystery that I can not comprehend, as a stimulus below the threshold of perception, like a ultrasonic melody of peace. It’s a secret, do not know what is. But I know that the road leading to it is called transcendence and living in the palace of emptiness. I know it only when you stop being myself, when I die really, I can see it.

Perhaps, in the final analysis, we all see the same thing but interpret it in different ways. So, some on 12th, I go to church and talk to her in the language without words until one day I respond with the music without sound.

Technical Information.

The system is programmed to control a church organ,via MIDI, with a computer. The computer control is a
livecoding improvisation with the SuperCollider programming language. Emphasis on semi-deterministic and algorithmic processes is achieved that once saved improvisation code as a function, can be automatically performed by the computer and the results are significantly different.

For this” release”, in the absence of a church organ, I used the excellent software Aeolus of Fons Adriaensen.

Ho he intentat, he escodrinyat, fins on he pogut, els racons de la meva psique. Ho he fet amb la raó i la desraó; m’he preguntat a mi mateix i li he preguntat al món, als arbres, a la gent …

Però jo no puc ser com ells.

Els envejo, ells segueixen tenint un pare amorós fins i tot després d’haver mort.

Jo no puc ser com ells i, malgrat tot, l’he vist …

És un misteri que no puc copsar, com un estímul per sota del llindar de la percepció, com una melodia ultrasònica de pau. És un secret, no sé què és. Però sé que el camí que porta cap a ella es diu transcendència i que viu al palau de la vacuïtat. Sé que només quan deixi de ser jo mateix, quan mori de veritat, podré veure-la.

Potser, al cap i a la fi, tots vegem el mateix però l’interpretem de diferents formes. Així que, alguns dies 12, vaig a l’esglèsia i parlo amb ella en el llenguatge sense paraules fins que un dia em respongui amb la música sense so.

El sistema està programat perquè un ordinador controli, via MIDI, un òrgan d’església. El control computacional consisteix en una
improvisació livecoding amb el llenguatge de programació SuperCollider. Posant especial èmfasi en processos semideterministes i algorítmics s’aconsegueix que, un cop guardat el codi de la improvisació com una funció, pugui ser interpretat automàticament per l’ordinador i els resultats siguin significativament diferents.

En el cas d’aquest” release”, en no disposar d’un òrgan d’església, he utilitzat el magnífic programari Aeolus, de Fons Adriaensen.
